The high face validity of questions that obviously pertain to alcohol-related problems has led to a concern that MAST may underdiagnose those not willing to admit to alcohol prob- lems 141. Key words: Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test - Reliability - Validity - Alcoholism - Diagnosis The MAST was designed to provide a consistent, quantifiable, structured interview instrument for the diagnosis of alcoholism that could be rapidly administered by professionals and non-professionals and the Self-Administered Short-MAST. Because reliability was lower for shorter versions, longer versions should be used where prac- tical. Where in- consistency occurred, MAST tended to over-diagnose. MAST diagnosis agreed with diagnosis by other criteria for alcoholism in approximately three of four cases.
